EU, WHO donate medical supplies to Azerbaijan to treat COVID-19 patients

The European Union (EU) and the World Health Organization (WHO) handed over 52 patient monitors, 258 nasal oxygen cannula, 258 venturi masks, 123 pulse oximeters, and spare parts for medical equipment as well as 987,000 examination gloves to Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Health, to help patients recover from severe illness due to COVID-19 and enable health-care workers to respond safely to the pandemic, Trend reports on Dec.30 referring to the EU.

The medical supplies were delivered by the WHO Country Office in Azerbaijan via financial support from the European Union within the Solidarity for Health Initiative project.

As earlier reported, on 27 March 2020, the EU announced the allocation of a large assistance package to help prevent, detect and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic in six countries of Eastern Europe and the Caucasus, including Azerbaijan.

Previously, two medical shipments were delivered to Azerbaijan in July and September 2020 as part of the Solidarity for Health Initiative.

“These 3rd and 4th shipments of protective gear and medical equipment that we are handing over to Azerbaijan today is yet another example of partnership and teamwork among the EU, WHO and Azerbaijan to help to fight the pandemic”, stated Kestutis Jankauskas, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the country.

On the same day, WHO donated 1 million medical masks to the Ministry of Health as a part of the campaign of the WHO’s Azerbaijani office to hand over 2.5 million medical masks to the local healthcare structures, government institutions working with vulnerable groups, and nongovernmental organizations. Earlier, within the campaign, 1 million masks were handed over to the Management Union of Medical Territorial Units (TABIB), 250,000 masks – to the Main Medical Directorate of the Ministry of Justice, 100,000 masks to the Social Services Agency, and others.

Azerbaijan discloses main principles of vaccination against COVID-19

The main principles of vaccination against COVID-19 have been announced in Azerbaijan, Teymur Musayev, head of the department of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Health said, Trend reports on Jan. 17.

“Among them are the principles of voluntariness, safety, transparency, phasing, justice, responsibility, cooperation,” head of the department added.

“At the initial stage, medical workers, people older 65, representatives of law enforcement agencies involved in anti-epidemic activity will be vaccinated,” Musayev said.

"Those who are at high risk from a medical point of view; people with chronic diseases of the respiratory system; those undergoing hemodialysis procedure; those having diabetes, obesity; people with at least one chronic disease aged 50 and older; people working in the education sector and social sphere; people permanently living in social institutions; employees having direct contact with the population working in ASAN and DOST service centers, the public transport sector, the banking sector, the telecommunications sector, as well as people working in high-risk conditions (ensuring national and regional security, etc.) will be also vaccinated," Musayev said.

“Passing by the fertile lands, I thought that just as after a drought these fertile lands await rain, so this land awaits its poems, its architectural structures that have been created here for centuries,” Kaseinov added. “Having united, we, all Turkic peoples, will give these lands a new life, we will revive these lands spiritually and culturally on an economic and financial basis. We must all do this together."

Joint exercises of the Azerbaijani and Turkish armies to be held

Servicemen of the Combined Arms Army will also take part in the Winter Exercises-2021 to be held in the Kars city of the fraternal Turkish Republic. After the performance of the National Anthem, speaking at the departing ceremony, Major General Fazil Agalarov spoke about the developing Azerbaijani-Turkish military-technical cooperation, the importance of the joint military exercises held annually in Nakhchivan and Kars, the glorious victory of our Victorious Army in the Patriotic War and wished success to the units. who will take part in the Winter Exercises-2021.

After the speeches, the units involved in the exercises left the Nakhchivan city to move in the direction of the Sadarak border checkpoint. Our units crossed the Umid Bridge over the Araz River and continued to move towards the Kars city.
