The Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) has rendered harmless a large number of unexploded ordnance, mines, and prohibited ammunition in Giyasli village of Aghdam region, Trend reported on January 5.
The agency's search operations are underway on the territory of the region that was liberated from Armenia's 30-year-old occupation on November 20, 2020.
On January 6, Trend quoted an unnamed source in the region's executive administration as saying that Aghdamkand and Sarijaly villages of the region had been completely demined. The source said that the demining operations continue in the villages of Giyasli and Shahbulag.
In its operational report for January 2, ANAMA said that its specialists found one piece of 82-mm mortar shell in Alibayli village of Tovuz region bordering on Armenia. The found shell was transported to the agency's central disposal area.
On January 5, experts from the Azerbaijani and Russian Emergencies Ministries started joint 45-day training courses on demining and cleaning Aghdam region from unexploded ordnance. After the courses, the demining and cleaning operations will initially begin on 100 hectares of the liberated territories of Aghdam region. It’s planned to complete the work within about three months.
To recap, the joint Russian-Turkish Monitoring Centre will operate in Aghdam to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire agreement of November 10, 2020.
On November 10, 2020, Baku and Yerevan signed a Moscow-brokered ceasefire deal to put an end to six weeks of fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani army declared a victory against the Armenian troops. The signed agreement obliged Armenia to withdraw its troops from the Azerbaijani lands that it has occupied since the early 1990s.
