The President of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly (GA), Volkan Bozkir, called for an increase of coronavirus vaccines supplied to low-income countries.
Bozkir spoke at a meeting of the UN Security Council held through videoconferencing on strengthening the multilateral approach and the role of the UN in the world, Report informs, citing TASS.
"The goal ahead of us is clear: we have the means to defeat this common enemy. Yet only 0.3% of the vaccines administered worldwide so far had gone to people in low-income countries. I repeat only 0.3%, " he stated.
"We can and must improve this situation," the GA Chairman added.
He also welcomed moves to abandon intellectual property protection for coronavirus vaccines. "This necessary solution will increase the production of vaccines, which will lead to saving lives."
