Azerbaijan is one of the most mine-contaminated countries and receives the least international support, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Leyla Abdullayeva said at the international conference “Humanitarian Demining and Sustainable Development Goals” held in Baku, Report informs.
Abdullayeva noted that for many years Armenia had been polluting the territories of Azerbaijan occupied at that time with mines. She said that more than a million mines were laid in these territories.
“Azerbaijan is working to restore these territories, hundreds of thousands of people are waiting to return to their homeland, but for this, these lands must first be restored, cleared of mines in order to ensure a calm and safe return of internally displaced persons,” Abdullayeva said.
She noted that despite the fact that the war ended, since November 2020, more than 200 people have become victims of mines.
She noted that on March 31, the participants of the international conference visited Aghdam, where they could see with their own eyes all the consequences of the Armenian occupation.
The agenda of the conference in Baku on April 1 covers such topics as improving cooperation mechanisms to intensify global demining efforts, the joint participation of government organizations, the international community, the private sector and civil society in this process, the application of best practices, innovative methods and technological innovations.
