The world is commemorating the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, which claimed the lives of 2,977 people from more than 90 countries.
On September 11, 2001, four US passenger planes were hijacked by suicide attackers. Two of the aircraft were flown into New York’s World Trade Center towers, which later collapsed, while another struck the Pentagon in Virginia.
The fourth aircraft crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers attempted to resist the hijackers.
A quarter-century later, the attacks continue to have a lasting impact in the United States and around the world.
