The earthquake occurred at a depth of 168 kilometres (104 miles), according to Indonesia’s meteorology agency BMKG. Its epicentre was on land, about 11 km (7 miles) southeast of Simalungun, Reuters reported.
The relatively deep earthquake was felt in several areas, including Tebing Tinggi, Kabanjahe and Limapuluh, BMKG said.

Authorities had not reported casualties or structural damage following the quake.
The earthquake came on the same day that another, much stronger earthquake struck off eastern Indonesia. A magnitude 7.7 quake and dozens of aftershocks in the region left at least 38 people dead, according to officials.
Indonesia lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” one of the world’s most active seismic zones, and experiences frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
