Nearly 3.8 million people have registered to vote, with more than 40% of enrolled voters having already cast their ballots through early voting ahead of election day, the BBC reports.
Under New Zealand’s electoral system, known as Mixed Member Proportional (MMP), voters cast two ballots: one for their preferred local candidate and another for a political party.
Since the introduction of the MMP system in 1996, New Zealand has had only one majority government.
