Trump has pledged to address the rising cost of living, but the ongoing war against Tehran has severely disrupted tanker shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, driving fuel prices higher across the board.
Diesel averaged just $3.71 per gallon a year ago. The increase in prices is putting pressure on farmers and truckers, who could be forced to pass the higher costs on to consumers.
Meanwhile, the average price of regular gasoline stood at $4.15 per gallon on Monday, when millions of Americans typically travel by car for the Labor Day holiday.
That price is up from an average of $3.20 per gallon a year ago. Prices are even higher in western US states, with regular gasoline costing $5.86 per gallon in California and $4.54 in Arizona, according to AAA.
