The condition of the crew, the extent of the damage and any potential environmental impact remain unknown, UKMTO said.
Authorities are investigating the incident. Vessels operating in the area have been advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity.
The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions following a separate report by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Friday that a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier had been struck and caught fire while attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz via what the force described as an “illegal route.”
It remains unclear whether the two incidents are connected.
