Appearing in an interview during Independence Day coverage, the Pennsylvania Republican argued that debates over communism and socialism will shape the country’s future just as they once defined the Cold War, News.Az reports, citing FOX News.
“When I was a soldier in the Cold War, I would have never imagined that 50 years later… we would have to defend against the ideas of communism, socialism, anti-Semitism,” McCormick said.

“I thought those ideas were in the dustbin of history. They’ve had a reemergence. They have shown to be failed. They are anti-American.”
McCormick made the remarks after reflecting on America’s 250th birthday, recalling that he attended the nation’s bicentennial celebration in 1976 as a 10-year-old with his father.
The senator praised what he described as five decades of economic and technological progress, crediting capitalism with lifting millions out of poverty and helping establish the United States as a global leader in innovation.
“What was unique about America, and it always has been, is its commitment to liberty and freedom and opportunity for all,” he said.
While acknowledging that the country remains imperfect, McCormick argued that the United States has consistently advanced through self-improvement rather than ideological revolution.
He also criticized what he described as growing support within parts of the Democratic Party for policies he opposes, claiming they embrace positions that are “anti-law enforcement, anti-military, anti-business” and antisemitic.
“Those ideas are failed ideas, and they’re not right for America,” McCormick said. “In fact, anti-American.”
The senator’s comments came amid broader America 250 celebrations, where political leaders used the milestone anniversary to offer competing visions of the country’s identity and future. President Donald Trump emphasized patriotism, ambition and military strength during his keynote address, while McCormick framed the next 50 years as a battle over the values that he believes have defined the United States since its founding.
