Abiy was sworn in during a ceremony attended by President Taye Atske-Selassie and senior government officials, formally beginning his new mandate, Anadolu Agency reported.
His ruling Prosperity Party won 438 of the 547 seats in parliament in the June election, securing a majority that paved the way for his reelection.

Abiy’s new term begins as Ethiopia faces renewed fighting involving government forces and the newly formed Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival, an armed group that has said it seeks to challenge the government.
Ethiopian authorities have accused regional countries, including neighboring Eritrea, of supporting armed groups operating against the government. Eritrea has rejected accusations of involvement in Ethiopia’s internal conflicts.
The tensions between the two neighboring countries have also affected diplomatic relations. Ethiopia announced Thursday that it was closing its embassy in Eritrea and declared 10 Eritrean diplomats in Addis Ababa persona non grata.
Abiy, who became prime minister in 2018, will now begin another five-year term as Ethiopia navigates ongoing security and regional tensions.
