Fikrat Jafarli, the chairman of the Center for Torture Prevention Research, has been sentenced to prison.

His relatives reported the situation to Meydan TV.

The relatives stated that today a court hearing was held regarding a lawsuit filed against the human rights defender under a special prosecution procedure.

The hearing took place at the Binagadi District Court, presided over by Judge Zamig Baghirov, where a decision was made.

According to the decision, Fikrat Jafarli was sentenced to 4 months of imprisonment.

Elvin Aliyev, a member of the Disciplinary Commission of the Bar Association and a lawyer, filed the lawsuit against the human rights defender under the special prosecution procedure.

Lawyer Elvin Aliyev claimed that Fikrat Jafarli had spread false accusations against him, as a result damaging his professional reputation.

He demanded that the human rights defender be held accountable under Article 147.1 (slander) of the Criminal Code.

The lawsuit was prompted by the publication on the Center for Torture Prevention Research’s Facebook page of a complaint from Elvin Allahverdiyev’s former lawyer, who is currently imprisoned.

The prisoner’s complaint stated that the lawyer had taken 10,500 manat from him but failed to achieve the promised legal outcome and later resorted to threatening behavior.

Fikrat Jafarli stated that the published information does not represent his personal opinion and was presented with reference to an appeal shared on social media by journalist Arzu Abdulla.

The human rights defender called the lawsuit against him a political order.

In his view, because he criticized the Bar Association, the leadership of the organization is trying to punish him.
