The attack occurred on Friday in the municipality of Río Hondo, where lawmaker Julio César Portillo Paz was seriously wounded before later dying in hospital, Reuters reports.

Portillo Paz’s death was confirmed by the National Unity of Hope (UNE) party, to which he belonged.
President Arévalo condemned the attack and confirmed that three officers of the National Civil Police had also been killed while performing their duties.
He instructed security forces to cooperate fully with prosecutors investigating the killings and to identify those responsible.
“We will not allow criminal violence to prevail over the lives and safety of Guatemalans,” Arévalo wrote on X.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a possible motive for the attack or identified any suspects.
The killings occurred approximately three weeks after former anti-corruption prosecutor Juan Francisco Solórzano Foppa was shot dead in Guatemala City.
That incident raised concerns about the influence of organized crime and the possible resurgence of politically motivated assassinations in the country.
However, investigators have not established any connection between the two attacks.
