In a statement issued on Saturday, Nigerian police confirmed that armed men had attacked the community, firing heavily and looting food supplies from local shops.
Police initially reported 10 fatalities. However, Amnesty International said additional bodies were recovered on Saturday, bringing the reported death toll to at least 40.
The identities of the attackers and their motives were not immediately established.

These groups frequently carry out attacks on rural communities, abduct residents for ransom, steal livestock and loot property.
