At least one person was injured, according to Odesa Regional Governor Oleh Kiper. The injured person was identified as a 29-year-old woman who suffered shrapnel wounds.
The attack also damaged part of the stadium’s roof and stands, while windows were blown out. Authorities said they were still assessing the full extent of the damage.
Local reports suggested that the stadium was struck by a Banderol missile-drone, although the circumstances and type of weapon involved were not independently confirmed in the report.
The attack immediately raised questions over the fate of Saturday’s scheduled Ukrainian Premier League fixture between Chornomorets and Kolos.
The teams were due to meet at Chornomorets Stadium on August 8 at 1 p.m. Kyiv time in the second round of the Ukrainian Premier League season.
As of Friday, there had been no official announcement confirming whether the match would be postponed or canceled following the damage to the stadium.
Chornomorets Stadium is located in Taras Shevchenko Park in the historic center of Odesa and serves as the home ground of FC Chornomorets. With a capacity of 34,164 spectators, it is the largest football stadium in southern Ukraine.
The venue has hosted Ukrainian Premier League matches, European club competitions and games involving Ukraine’s national team.
The damage comes as Odesa continues to face Russian attacks during the war, with strikes affecting civilian areas and infrastructure across the city. The stadium incident adds another disruption to Ukrainian sports facilities, while officials now assess whether the venue can safely host the upcoming league match.
