The United Nations announced Wednesday that Sanchez will serve alongside Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, who will continue in her role as co-chair, News.Az reports, citing Anadolu Agency.
In announcing the appointment, Guterres highlighted the need for faster global action to achieve the SDGs and praised Sanchez’s leadership in promoting sustainable development.

The UN said the co-chairs play a key role in supporting the secretary-general’s efforts to increase international commitment and action toward meeting the Sustainable Development Goals, the global targets adopted to address issues including poverty, inequality, climate change and sustainable economic growth by 2030.
Sanchez joins a group of influential global leaders who advocate for the SDGs by encouraging governments, businesses and civil society to strengthen implementation of the UN’s development agenda.
Guterres also thanked former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his service as co-chair, recognizing his contributions to advancing the organization’s sustainable development initiatives.
The appointment comes as the United Nations continues to warn that progress toward many of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals remains off track, prompting renewed calls for greater international cooperation and investment.
