The temperature was recorded by 3:30 p.m. local time, according to the Hong Kong Observatory, which attributed the extreme heat to subsiding air on the periphery of Typhoon Dolphin.
The heat is expected to persist over the next several days, with temperatures potentially rising above 37C (98.6F) in some parts of the city.

The record-breaking heat came as Typhoon Dolphin made landfall in China’s eastern Zhejiang province on Sunday afternoon.
The combination of the typhoon’s circulation and atmospheric conditions around the storm has contributed to unusually hot and oppressive conditions in Hong Kong.
The latest temperature surpassed the city’s previous record for the hottest day since official meteorological records began more than 140 years ago.
