Elvin Mustafayev, currently on a hunger strike, has reportedly faced pressure during his detention and has been moved to another location.

Elvin Mustafayev’s family, whose son is an imprisoned member of the Labour Desk Confederation of Trade Unions, has had no contact with him for the past eight days.

The Labour Desk released this information.

It was reported that Elvin Mustafayev, who started a hunger strike on May 6 to demand the release of all political prisoners, including opposition figure Tofig Yagublu, has faced  pressure and transferred to another facility.

The statement noted that his current location is unknown, and his family and friends are worried about his well-being.

Elvin Mustafayev was detained on August 4, 2023, and charged with drug trafficking.

Mustafayev denied the accusations, stating that the drugs had been planted on him.

On January 31, 2024, the Baku Serious Crimes Court sentenced him to 3 years in prison.

Later that year, despite his health problems, he was moved from a medical facility back to a prison, which led him to begin a hunger strike in protest.

Four members of the Labour Desk Confederation of Trade Unions – founded in 2022 to defend workers’ rights in Azerbaijan – are currently imprisoned: chairperson Afiaddin Mammadov and members Aykhan Israfilov, Elvin Mustafayev, and Mohyeddin Orujov. The activists consider all the charges against them to be fabricated and politically motivated.

Nevertheless, authorities deny the presence of political prisoners in the country.
