The book by Igbal Abilov, editor-in-chief of Talysh National Academy News and an ethnic researcher currently serving a prison sentence, has been published.
The Committee for the Protection of Igbal Abilov’s Rights has released information on the matter.
Igbal Abilov, who lives in Belarus, was detained on July 22, 2024, when he arrived in Azerbaijan to visit his relatives.
Igbal Abilov was charged with allegedly working with Armenian intelligence services and deliberately trying to provoke ethnic hatred in Azerbaijan.
He was charged under Articles 274 (treason), 281.3 (open calls against the state - when committed on the instructions of foreign organizations and their representatives), and 283.1 (incitement of national, racial, social or religious hatred and enmity) of the Criminal Code.
Igbal Abilov was sentenced to 18 years in prison by the Lankaran Grave Crimes Court on May 20 of this year.
It is reported that the book “Fragments of Talysh Speech I” (originally published in Russian as “ФРАГМЕНТЫ ТАЛЫШСКОЙ РЕЧИ I”) includes manuscripts collected in the second half of the 19th century by orientalist Boris Dorn, which were discovered by Abilov in archives in 2012.
“These materials are of particular importance as one of the oldest scientific studies known to date on the northern dialect of the Talysh language.”
The book is the first publication in the “Bibliotheca Talyshica” series, established by the Talysh National Academy, of which Abilov was a co-founder.
“The main goal of this series is to present to the academic community not only scientific works written in the Talysh language that have not yet been published, but also the scholarly heritage of Talysh scholars who lived from the Middle Ages to the present day. The series will also include previously unknown research in fields such as linguistics, archaeology, geography, anthropology, and other disciplines, preserved in archives until now,” the statement says.
