The JBL Bar 1300 MK2 Sounds Incredible And Has A Clever Modular Design

The JBL Bar 1300 MK2 brings an immersive, flexible and modular experience to your living room. It comes with detachable side speakers and a subwoofer right in the box, so you don’t have to spend extra on rear surrounds or thumping bass. I spent two weeks watching movies, listening to music, and using its detachable units as standalone Bluetooth speakers. If you are looking to add a home theater system to your living room without spending upwards of $2,000, this is a product worth considering.

Setting up the flagship JBL soundbar is as easy as installing the JBL One app and following the on-screen instructions. All you need to do is place the main chassis below your television to connect it via the eARC port and plug the subwoofer into a power outlet.

The app will then guide you through an automatic audio calibration, including a process to detach the modular speakers and place them in your primary listening position. This is when I realized the magnets holding these speakers are the strongest I’ve seen on a gadget.

I love being able to detach these modular units and place them anywhere I like.

I’m surprised by how easy JBL has made the whole modular experience. You can simply pull up the two speaker units to take them off the main chassis. And when you need to charge them (they are battery-powered), you can simply place them on the two ends of the soundbar without worrying about their alignment. They attach through docking magnets, which are strong enough to withstand accidental pulls.

You can also use the modular speakers as standalone Bluetooth speakers. I put them in the kitchen while making my coffee and in my office room for ambient music. It’s a nice feature to have at your disposal if you don’t already have portable speakers at home. The two modular units are rated to last up to 12 hours on continuous playback.

Returning to the main chassis, it has a clean, matte finish with metal grilles protecting the drivers (8x racetrack drivers, 7x tweeters, 4x up-firing drivers). It gives a more rugged feel than a luxurious look. Plus, if you want to wall-mount the soundbar and rear speakers, you get L- and U-shaped brackets alongside their screws inside the box (several rivals charge extra for this).

On the front, you get a hidden LED text display that shows you the audio source, volume level, and audio formats. It is bright enough to be easily legible in a bright room and automatically turns off after a few seconds.

On the top, the main chassis also features touch controls for when you don’t want to get to the remote. As for the subwoofer, it is a clean, rounded unit consisting of dual 8-inch driver configurations. For most of my experience, I watched movies on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix, across action, thriller, and romance genres on my Sony Bravia 7 II TV. The soundbar volume didn’t exceed 15 for my mid-sized living room (it really is that powerful).

When the modular units are used as rear surrounds, the JBL Bar 1300 MK2 offers an immersive movie-watching experience. And if you leave them on the main chassis, they give you an incredibly expansive sound. JBL says it delivers a “wide, cinema-like soundstage,” and I can’t disagree.

I placed the two modular speakers right beside my couch, at around my shoulder height for Dolby Atmos-supported content. I could feel the missiles zoom past me in action scenes, and the sub added deep bass for crashing cars. It had me gripped throughout Spectre. And in Top Gun: Maverick, the scene where a jet flies over the head of Ed Harris felt more real than ever, thanks to the upward-firing drivers.

The best part of the Bar 1300 MK2 is that none of the action sequences bury the dialogue. JBL’s proprietary PureVoice Dialogue Enhancement Technology kept the vocals clear and precise. I also liked its handling of dynamics and the sub not overshadowing the sound coming from the main bar.

And then there’s the Night mode, which uses the two wireless speakers to supply milder audio with softer bass. This isn’t a feature I was planning to use often, but I’ve loved it for my 2am movie sessions.

The exceptional sound experience extends to music listening, too. From Bollywood dance numbers to Queen’s rock hits and Vance Joy’s acoustic music, I loved the sound, especially when the detachable speakers were housed in the main unit. It offered pleasing instrument separation, clear vocals, deep bass without affecting the mids, and vibrant highs.

Overall, the JBL Bar 1300 MK2 sounds incredible, and its modularity adds exceptional flexibility. At $1,700 / INR 1,50,000, it isn’t the most affordable option, but it is the most versatile and feature-packed soundbar in its segment. The versatility is wonderful and unique. Being able to detach two speakers and carry one to my office room for ambient music when needed, or use both of them as rear surrounds is great. More importantly, JBL doesn’t stray from the basics. This modular flexibility is an added benefit on top of its excellent sound quality, rugged build, and an easy-to-use app.
