The final court hearing in the criminal case of social worker Zamin Zaki, who had been in custody as part of the “NGO case”, took place at the Baku Court on Grave Crimes on March 11.
The verdict against Zamin Zaki was announced during the hearing, which was presided over by Judge Elmin Rustamov.
Zamin Zaki was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months of imprisonment.
The state prosecutor had requested an 8-year prison sentence.
Zamin Zaki was charged under several articles of the Criminal Code, including official forgery, abuse of official authority, and legalization (laundering) of large amounts of property obtained through criminal means.
Arrests in the “NGO case” began in March 2025
Arrests related to the “NGO case” began in March 2025. At that time, human rights defender Bashir Suleymanli and Mammad Alpay (Mammadzade), the executive director of the Election Monitoring Alliance, were arrested.
In April, three more individuals — Asef Ahmadov, Zamin Zaki, and Ahmad Mammadzade — were arrested by the same decision.
During the investigation, alternative preventive measures were chosen for several other activists instead of arrest. Among them were Hafiz Hasanov, head of the Law and Development Public Union, and Mehriban Rahimli, Azerbaijan advisor to the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), among others.
Additionally, Subhan Hasanli, head of the Social Rights Center, who lives abroad, and public activist Aytaj Aghazade were placed on a wanted list with a detention order.
