Civil activist Ahmad Mammadli was detained on the evening of May 6.

According to his friend, fellow civil activist Kamran Mammadli, Ahmad Mammadli lost contact around 9:50 PM.

“At first, calls to his phone didn’t go through. Now they do, but he doesn’t answer. We suspect he has been detained,” Kamran Mammadli wrote on his Facebook account.

Ahmad Mammadli’s wife, Turkan Mammadli, also posted on social media, addressing the Ministry of Internal Affairs:

“I last contacted Ahmad at 22:11. After that, I haven’t been able to reach him. Where is my husband? Answer me!!!”

According to Kamran Mammadli, Ahmad Mammadli was detained by officers of the Binagadi District Police Department:

“It is claimed that he seriously injured someone. He himself says he was beaten and is in serious condition.”

Ahmad Mammadli’s wife, Turkan Mammadli, told Meydan TV that the charges against the activist are false and unfounded.

“What reason would he have to carry a knife? Ahmad didn’t even use a knife at home. He never gets into fights.”

Turkan Mammadli stated that the real reason for Ahmad Mammadli’s arrest is related to his activism:

“His arrest is linked to his activist work. Ahmad is also involved in independent journalism. He shared court materials with the media. That could also be a reason for his arrest.”

The civil activist has also been under a travel ban since January 2024.

On January 23 of that year, he was summoned to the Anti-Corruption Department under the Prosecutor General’s Office. There, he was told that a document he submitted to the State Service for Mobilization and Conscription — stating he had been admitted to a Turkish university for graduate studies — was considered fake, and he was banned from leaving the country.

Turkan Mammadli said that Ahmad Mammadli’s legal rights are being defended by lawyer Elchin Sadigov.

She added that she still hasn’t been able to contact her husband or obtain any information about him.
