The incident comes amid a rise in attacks on commercial shipping since the US-Israel war on Iran began in February.
According to data from the International Maritime Organization and the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency, more than 120 commercial vessels have been hit since the conflict began.
Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz early in the war and has repeatedly warned that vessels attempting to pass through the strategic waterway without its permission could face destruction.
Attacks on shipping have increased since the United States reimposed a blockade on Iran’s southern ports in July. October was the deadliest month for commercial vessels since the war began, with at least 29 ships hit, compared with 20 reported attacks in March, according to Al Jazeera.
