According to security sources, the targeted convoy was heavily reinforced, transporting more than 200 Russian fighters from the state-backed Africa Corps (formerly known as the Wagner Group) and over 100 Malian state soldiers. The forces were pushing toward the highly contested northern town of Anefis when they were caught in a dense, coordinated grid of insurgent fire, News.Az reports, citing Reuters.
The ambush comes on the heels of a broader offensive launched on July 4 by an alliance of armed groups, which initiated simultaneous assaults on state military bases across Gao, Sévaré, and Aguelhok.

The Tuareg-led separatist group, the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), has officially claimed sole responsibility for Thursday’s ambush. However, the operational footprint bears structural similarities to previous joint strikes executed alongside the regional Al-Qaeda branch, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM). The two insurgent groups previously unified in April for a high-profile attack that penetrated the capital city of Bamako and killed Mali’s defense minister.
Anefis has become the primary operational focal point for the Malian military junta and its Russian allies. It represents one of the final remaining government strongholds capable of protecting the vital transport corridor connecting Gao and Kidal.

Repeated Convoy Targeting: Thursday’s operation marks the second time this week a major military reinforcement column has been intercepted and routed while attempting to bolster the besieged base at Anefis.
Cross-Border Defense Intervention: Acknowledging the severity of the threat, the neighboring military junta of Niger—a member of the Alliance of Sahel States alongside Mali—scrambled combat aircraft to provide urgent battlefield close air support during the hours-long engagement.
While Mali’s state military has yet to issue a definitive casualty report, the persistence and scale of the rebel ambushes underscore a worrying trend for Bamako. Despite relying on the expanded deployment of heavily armed Russian contract forces to quell the decade-long insurgency, the military government is facing highly sophisticated guerrilla tactics that are systematically challenging its grip on the northern territories.
