A court decision has been issued in Yekaterinburg regarding members of the Azerbaijani diaspora.
According to APA, the Kirovsky District Court of the city sentenced the former head of the diaspora in the Urals, Shahin Shikhlinski, to 9 years in prison, and his son Mutvali Shikhlinski to 8 years. They were found guilty of using violence against a representative of the authorities.
According to the court’s ruling, Shahin Shikhlinski will serve his sentence in a strict-regime penal colony, while his son will serve his sentence in a general-regime facility.
Earlier, on March 5, Shahin Shikhlinski had been sentenced to 22 years in prison on charges of contract killing and attempted murder. With the latest ruling, the sentences were combined, bringing his total sentence to 24 years. He will spend the first 4 years in prison and the remaining term in a strict-regime colony.
In June 2025, Russian law enforcement agencies carried out an operation against Azerbaijanis in Yekaterinburg. Force was used during the operation, and as a result, brothers Ziyaddin and Huseyn Safarov died from their injuries.
Following the incident, other members of the Safarov family and several Azerbaijanis were arrested. They were charged in connection with crimes allegedly committed in 2001, 2010, and 2011.
A few days laterr, on July 2, Shahin Shikhlinski, head of the Azerbaijani diaspora in Yekaterinburg, was detained. According to witnesses, individuals in military uniforms, wearing masks and without identification, blocked the car he was in and used force. Shikhlinski and his son Mutvali were pulled out of the car, thrown to the ground, and handcuffed.
Mutvali Shikhlinski was released after about 15 minutes. Shahin Shikhlinski was released after several hours of questioning.
Later, law enforcement authorities opened a criminal case, claiming that violence had been used against a state representative during their detention.
On July 16, Mutvali Shikhlinski was detained again in connection with this case and placed in pre-trial detention. Shahin Shikhlinski was declared wanted.
On August 2, Shahin Shikhlinski was detained in Moscow and later transferred to Yekaterinburg.
