The FBI did not immediately respond to requests for comment, Reuters reported.
ShinyHunters said in a statement posted on its dark-web site and in an online chat with Reuters that it targeted the agency in retaliation for a May 2026 FBI announcement that detailed the group’s methods and advised potential victims not to pay.

The group shared what it described as a screenshot of a vandalized FBI job site, along with a sample of allegedly stolen data. Reuters could not independently verify the authenticity of the screenshot.
A message posted on the FBI job site on Tuesday said the site and the agency’s Special Agent Applicant Portal were both “currently unavailable.”
Reuters was able to partially verify some of the allegedly stolen FBI personnel information by checking names and postal addresses against credit bureau records and previously breached data held by dark-web intelligence firm District 4 Labs.
In at least nine cases, Reuters found matching information. However, Reuters could not determine where the data originated or establish whether it had been stolen from the FBI’s internal systems, as ShinyHunters claimed.
