A red air alert was issued, prompting NATO air policing fighter jets to be dispatched to the area. Kaunas Airport was also temporarily closed, the crisis management centre said, Reuters reported.
Neighbouring Latvia issued a yellow air warning in some regions bordering Lithuania during the same period, citing a possible threat. The warning was later lifted, the Latvian military said.

The incident comes amid repeated reports of Ukrainian drones entering NATO airspace in the Baltic region in recent months. Kyiv has said some of the drones were diverted from their intended courses by Russian electronic jamming.
These incidents have raised concerns among NATO members that Russia’s war against Ukraine could increasingly affect the alliance’s eastern borders.
Lithuanian authorities had not identified the flying object in the initial reports, and its origin remained unclear.
